Although it may appear treacherous, the steep and sidewinding landmark Lombard St. in the ever-eclectic City by the Bay was actually designed with its eight hairpin switchbacks to provide safer passage. Every day, an endless parade of carefully maneuvering cars weaves side-to-side down this famous red brick road of such naturally sharp gradient, surrounded by Victorian homes lined with vibrant gardens. A fundamental element of the SF cityscape, the slalom reminds of a sacred time in the folklore of America’s motor vehicle and the promise of industrialism.
